Who is bhagavan

Thus Krishna is the Supreme Person. One should meditate on Him. One should delight in Him. One should worship Him and make offerings to Him. Gopala-tapani Upanishad 1.

The syllable krish refers to the all-attractive quality of Krishna, and the syllable na refers to His spiritual bliss. When the verb krish is added to the affix na , it becomes the word Krishna, indicating the Supreme Truth. Mahabharata, Udyoga-parva Arjuna has become overwhelmed with compassion for those who are about to die on the battlefield. In fact, such is his grief that he himself is prepared to die rather than kill his enemies. But Arjuna is a warrior and from a noble family, therefore Krishna advises Arjuna against his weakness of heart.

Fighting is indeed a nasty business, but when duty calls, such fighting may be unavoidable. In ancient times, acts of aggression were abhorred and strictly forbidden in society and between nations. When such aggression did occur, retaliation and war were acceptable. According to the great sage Vasishtha, there are six types of aggressors and according to Manu-samhita these aggressors are to be met with lethal response. Now in this chapter He explains His specific opulences to Arjuna.

In the previous chapter He has clearly explained His different energies to establish devotion in firm conviction. Again in this chapter He tells Arjuna about His manifestations and various opulences.

The more one hears about the Supreme God, the more one becomes fixed in devotional service. One should always hear about the Lord in the association of devotees; that will enhance one's devotional service.

Others cannot take part in such discourses. The Lord clearly tells Arjuna that because Arjuna is very dear to Him, for his benefit such discourses are taking place. Just like we have our practical experience. Anyone who is very rich, he's attractive. He becomes attractive. Many men go to him for some favor. One who is very influential, he becomes very attractive. One who is very famous, he becomes attractive. One who is very learned, wise, he becomes attractive. One who is very wise, he becomes attractive.

Female figures or goddesses may bear the same title in the feminine form, Bhagawati. The title appears in Buddhism as a descriptor for the Buddha back to the early Pali Buddhist documents. This is most often translated simply as Lord Buddha or Lord Shakyamuni, where the original would be something like sakamunisa bhagavato. In many English texts these would simply appear as Lord Krishna or the like. In Hinduism the term Svayam Bhagavan may be used to differentiate the God-head from other gods who might bear the title of Lord.

In Hindu scriptures and tradition, there are thousands of gods and goddesses. Hindus believe that Brahman is eternal and everywhere at once. Hindus may say that everything is Brahman, and Brahman is everything.
