In the early days of the Era of Harmony , Sweetie Belle became a founding member of the Cutie Mark Crusaders and during the Era of Twilight , she gained her Cutie Mark and strove to help other colts do the same. Sweetie was the second, and youngest, of the Belle sisters , and as such, grew up in the Belle residence with her sister and parents, Hondo Flanks and Cookie Crumbles.

Though her sister moved out and set up a business and life at Carousel Boutique , Sweetie remained living with her parents for several more years. On her 5th birthday , Sweetie Belle learned a lesson that would haunt her for the next several years of her life - to never try to shine around Rarity, or else she would get hurt in the process.

Though she loved her sister, this, their naturally different personalities and Sweetie's generally unintelligent and unskilled nature caused the two to gain a mildly strained relationship. Sweetie's first known interaction with the Crusaders was during Luna's return when she huddled with the three during Nightmare Moon 's appearance at Ponyville Town Hall.

After forming their Crusader club, Sweetie had many adventures with her friends. To celebrate their formation, Sweetie Belle created a cape for the three to wear during their adventures. Perhaps her first quest was when the trio traveled into the Everfree Forest in order to find Elizabeak , one of Fluttershy 's chickens , after it got free as the pegasus was babysitting for the three foals. During this time, the Cutie Mark Crusaders clubhouse was constructed by Applejack , which served as their base of operations for the years to come.

During the day of its construction, Sweetie and her friends embarked on their second known quest to get their cutie marks by joining a talent show for their school, though lost the contest. However, Sweetie Belle's pursuits to get her cutie mark woud only escalate, not deescalate, from here.

She joined the Foal Free Press , a school-based newspaper becoming a reporter who went under the name " Gabby Gums " along with her friends. The girls', though initially reporting in public events, quickly devolved into reporting private gossips and dramas, hurting much of the ponies she loved, causing them to retire from the business shortly. Though her exploits were largely unknown on this day, Sweetie Belle traveled to Canterlot to attend the Canterlot Wedding , where she had a dance with Spike.

Absolutely love Rarity as a character, for me Season 4 did such a great job with her and her character writing and she gets my vote as the most consistently written and my personal favourite Mane 6 pony of Season 4.

Have always liked the Cutie Mark Crusaders and there is a lot more to them than one would think, this episode shows how far Sweetie Belle has come on as a character.

All three are done perfect justice here, it is a perfect example of how to portray sister relationships and conflicts in animation and anywhere and one can see what makes them click so well as characters. It is not quite as amazing as the previous episode "Maud Pie" or quite one of my favourite episodes of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' overall, but it is to me still among the better episodes of a mostly solid Season 4. If to nit-pick the episode could have explained how Princess Luna could show the memories from a third person perspective, that wasn't made clear to me but that may be just me.

The characterisation is brilliant, some of the best, most interesting and deepest of the season and also up to this point of the show.

Sweetie Belle was not this interesting in the previous episodes, her personality is different here and it may take some getting used to for some but she actually develops and learns a lesson and from her misgivings.

She could have been completely unlikeable in this scenario, but not here, actually related to her. Absolutely loved the sister dynamic between her and Rarity, who genuinely loves Sweetie Belle without being over-protective something that "Somepony to Watch Over Me" did badly with Applejack's character writing.

When the Crusaders are about to go onstage for their performance, Twilight Sparkle is surprised to learn that Sweetie Belle does not have a singing role. However, Sweetie Belle says that she dislikes the idea of singing in front of a crowd. Sweetie Belle's showmanship and powerful voice overpower those of Fluttershy in Stare Master when Sweetie Belle turns Fluttershy's lullaby into a lively gospel-style song.

In Sleepless in Ponyville , when singing the campfire song 99 Buckets of Oats On the Wall after Scootaloo suggests it in order to stay awake and avoid having nightmares, she sings terribly.

In Crusaders of the Lost Mark , Sweetie Belle receives her cutie mark, which has a star with a musical note in it, reflecting her singing voice.

Later, when Scootaloo is struggling to come up with additional lyrics, Sweetie comes up with some effortlessly. Scootaloo calls her lyrics "awesome! In Stare Master she gave her fellow Cutie Mark Crusaders matching capes that she made by ruining Rarity 's beautiful golden fabric, forcing Rarity to work overnight. She accidentally makes a costume with five legs and aligns them in a line.

She then bemoans how she'll never be like her older sister. Apple Bloom suggests she uses the dress form, to which Sweetie Belle responds "Oh, is that what that's for? She acknowledges that she isn't very good at it but enjoys it nonetheless. Aside from fabricating costumes for the Cutie Mark Crusaders, during The Show Stoppers , Sweetie Belle was also in charge of making props for their performance. But Sweetie Belle did not clean up the paint brushes in-between colors resulting in the backgrounds being colored in messy brown and in other brownish colors.

Sweetie Belle herself admits that she was curious as to "why all the colors looked like mud. At the beginning of Sisterhooves Social , Sweetie Belle's mother instructs her in cooking. Rarity awakens to the smell of smoke and rushes downstairs to find that Sweetie Belle had started a fire. She incinerates all of the food she prepares, including juice and liquefied toast. After Rarity remakes the breakfast, Sweetie Belle is allowed to add the garnish to a plate of eggs. She doesn't damage the food but manages to break a table in half.

Near the end of the episode, Rarity walks into the kitchen to see that it is a mess again. Sweetie Belle comes out presenting an unburnt pie. Sweetie Belle does not perform magic throughout the first three seasons, though her horn sparks briefly near the beginning of One Bad Apple. The sparks are a light green, similar to her eye color. At the beginning of Twilight Time , Sweetie Belle tries lifting a broom with her magic, but she is unable to move it more than a couple of feet.

At the end of the episode, she levitates the broom around the library. In Appleoosa's Most Wanted , Sweetie Belle uses her magic to close the door to Trouble Shoes' cart and to take the key ring used to lock the jail cell where Trouble Shoes is. She also attempts to lift a barrel with it in the episode's ending, but is not successful. In Party Pooped , she uses her magic to put Scootaloo's helmet on the latter's head, and they give each other a high hoof.

In Crusaders of the Lost Mark , Sweetie Belle levitates Pipsqueak and also uses magic when handing out ballots during a portion of The Vote and while making repairs to the playground equipment. In Campfire Tales , she uses a shield spell to protect herself from Fly-ders. Sweetie Belle deeply admires her older sister Rarity and tries to show her devotion by helping Rarity with her work and chores.

Despite her good intentions, Sweetie Belle's efforts are frequently disastrous, much to the dismay of Rarity. In Stare Master , she tries to retrieve some ribbon for one of Rarity's new outfits, and sets off a chain reaction of destruction that wrecks Rarity's bedroom.

In Sisterhooves Social , Sweetie Belle is prepared to spend an entire week with Rarity, but her burning desire to do something nice for her sister results in one disaster after another and creates tension between them. Through Applejack 's help, Rarity learns of the give-and-take nature of sisterly relationships, and she and Sweetie Belle compete together in the Sisterhooves Social competition. Rarity develops a liking for Gabby Gums' gossipy writing at first, but she later discovers Gabby Gums' true identity.

Rarity confronts Sweetie Belle about the paper, making Sweetie Belle realize how wrong it is to invade someone else's privacy. After the Crusaders apologize to the public and their siblings, Rarity hugs Sweetie Belle.
