However, taking into account the minimum rest requirements, a driver cannot work for more than 15 hours in one day up to three occasions between weekly rest periods. An 8 hour drive would be about miles. Professional long drivers can average over yards m in competition, compared with yard m averages from the top PGA Tour drivers and yards m for an average amateur.

One rule of thumb to keep in mind, especially when looking at reports like Carfax or AutoCheck, is that 15, miles per year is considered to be the industry average. Therefore, if you're looking at a vehicle that is ten years old, it's not unreasonable for it to have , to , miles on it.

But there is a whole underlayer of health risks of driving that many of us don't think about at all. The 30 minute break can be for sleep, eating, shower, or any other activity the trucker wants to spend the time on before continuing the journey. This limit is actually based on a 7-day or 8-day period according to the time specified by carriers as their start period. According to this limit, truckers cannot be on duty for over 60 hours in a 7-day period or 70 hours in an 8-day period.

The implication is that a trucker can only complete 60 hours on duty for 7 consecutive days and 70 hours on duty for 8 consecutive days.

Once you clock 60 or 70 hours, you must take 34 consecutive hours off duty before you can drive a commercial vehicle. This off duty period is called the hour restart as it allows you to set the duty period to zero for a new calculation.

However, during the restart period, truckers can engage in non-driving tasks such as paperwork, loading and unloading freight among others. Note than the hour restart is not mandatory but most companies enforce it to reduce fatigue among truckers. This also depends on the truck driving job. OTR drivers spend the longest time on the road. Most OTR truckers spend over days on duty, reducing their home time and causing a lot of pain for their families.

Local truckers get to go home every night although they may have little time for the family. However, it is possible to do night shifts so you can spend your days with your loved ones as a local truck driver. Regional and line haul truckers also enjoy more home time with many drivers spending the weekend at home.

The main reason people choose OTR is because it pays more and offers an opportunity to see the country. If you are not a fan of loneliness, it may not be the best job for you.

Data from the U. Department of Transportation shows that the average American driver drives for 13, miles per year. This comes to a little over 1, miles each month and about miles per week. In theory, with two drivers you should be able to travel 1, miles over 16 hours without stopping, seeing as one person can sleep while the other drives.

Unfortunately it's not quite that straightforward, and we'd recommend erring on the side of caution. Trying to rest while sitting upright in a moving car is no substitute for a good night's sleep in a warm bed, so even after a two-hour snooze in the passenger seat, the second driver is likely to feel just as tired as the first after eight hours on the road.

The moral of the story? Taking all this into consideration, a car with two driving passengers can likely cover around miles safely over a maximum of ten hours, as long as you share driving and take the necessary breaks.

As well as allowing you to travel further, sharing the driving also makes the trip less daunting, means there'll be someone else in the car to keep you focused and entertained, and makes it a whole lot more fun! Having young passengers or pets in the car with you can have a massive effect on the distance you can safely drive in one day for a few reasons. Firstly, let's face it - children and animals are pretty needy, which means they're always after attention and entertainment.

This will ultimately mean the driver is more distracted, forced to concentrate even more and as a result, becomes tired more quickly. The more quickly the driver gets worn out, the fewer miles he or she will be able to safely drive. Young children and pets will also need more frequent stops than just the regulation two-hour intervals, for toilet breaks, snack top-ups, and time to blow off some steam.

These extra stops will inevitably eat into the eight-hour driving window, which means you'll cover less ground. Remember - young passengers and furry friends can be pretty unpredictable, so don't be surprised if you're unable to drive as far as you expected.
