Elizabeth "Liz" Lemon Tina Fey is the executive show runner for a late night sketch comedy show called "The Girlie Show", that stars her close friend and major drama queen Jenna Maroney Jane Krakowski. So to do so, he brings on unhinged, wildly unpredictable star Tracy Jordan Tracy Morgan to turn the series into a ratings hit.
But Liz soon finds out that controlling her oddball writing staff, the NBC page program, keeping Tracy on a short leash, and getting him to get along with Jenna proves to be one disaster after another.
Will TGS ever see true success? And will Liz find the right partner to get married and start a family? Work can be such a production. Did you know Edit. Trivia Alec Baldwin has said that this show was the best job he's ever had. Quotes Liz Lemon : Why are you wearing a tux? User reviews Review. Top review. It's always been my contention that great comedians make some of the best dramatic actors. Well, what we have here is the corollary to the above-stated theorum.
Our good buddy, Alec Baldwin, he of the "Third place is you're fired" monologue from "Glengarry", has quietly honed his comic timing via a run of "SNL" appearances and movie roles "State and Main" and emerged as one of the funniest actors around.
His delivery has gotten so good that he's become one of those guys that's funny standing still, before he utters word one. You're laughing before you even know what the premise is. It's a hard pill to swallow, but it's gotten to the point that I don't know if I'll ever be able to watch Alec Baldwin again in a dramatic role without lapsing into hysterics before he deigns to offer a line of dialogue. If for no other reason, you should be watching this show just to see him deliver a line.
And if you still want another reason, Jack McBrayer is a flat-out hoot, and Tina Fey, who wisely scrambled from the deck of "SNL" before the ship utterly submerged, is obviously having the time of her life.
And all good things decline dramatically in the ratings over the years, and all good things have lower ad rates than they used to. Some of our articles contain contextual affiliate links. Taken at face value, the comments are hysterical, but when you take a step back and think just an ounce harder about what he said, you're left wondering if Tracy is really dumb or is actually the smartest character on the show and just playing a character yes, this show is meta on top of meta.
In fact, they ultimately did an entire episode about this in which Liz thinks Tracy can't read, which is wrong, and leads to Tracy taking advantage of the situation. Good times. There might not be a better episode title out there. This episode in the middle of 30 Rock 's second season is one of their best, and a great example of how they used their own show to make fun of other television shows and their ridiculous concepts. It's incredibly inappropriate and stupid, but it should come as no big surprise that it's one of the most popular shows in the country.
The lives of those inside 30 Rock then essentially devolves into all the things Jack just mentioned, with the main one being betrayal but there are also alliances, lies, and even physical challenges. The splicing of clips from "MILF Island" into this episode make for comedy gold as it feels like the host of that show Rob Huebel is actually narrating the current episode of 30 Rock. At one critical moment in the episode, the camera pans to a television in the background and the host looks at the audience and says, "The game is about to change," right before cutting to commercial.
This episode is a perfect example of how 30 Rock uses its place as a show about a show to poke fun at its own industry, and there's plenty more of that throughout the entire series. It's one of the things that makes 30 Rock so great. This is my favorite episode of 30 Rock , so I wasn't going to leave it out. By this point, you'll already have met Liz's on-again-off-again boyfriend, Beeper King Dennis Duffy, who returns in this episode with not only his latest get-rich-quick scheme, but also a shocking confession — that he's a sex addict.
That, along with Tracy announcing that he's planning a trip to space, quickly becomes a subplot to this episode as Jack takes center stage ahead of his 50th birthday. Jack, going through a mid-life crisis of sorts, realizes that he is a man who has everything — everything, that is, except happiness. He then spends the majority of the episode trying to find a gift he received as a child that made him so happy he vomited. One of the best gags in this episode comes when Jack wishes he could see the world through the eyes of Kenneth, the page.
We also get a glimpse of what it's like seeing the world through Tracy's and Jack's eyes. As for Liz's storyline with Dennis, that hits a boiling point when she intercepts a call from Dennis to Jenna as he calls all his former partners to let them know he's a sex addict and to apologize. Liz, who didn't know of their past relationship, takes her anger out on Jenna, allowing an on-stage accident to injure her. She's only able to get back in Jenna's good graces is by agreeing to let her employees see an embarrassing commercial for a low-rate phone sex hotline she was in years earlier.
All the while, the crew is creating a fake space flight for Tracy in the hopes that they can keep him from actually trying to go to space.
